A privately owned passenger ferry FILOJET capsized and later sank off the coast of Kyrenia in northern Cyprus on August 30, leaving eight people dead and 18 missing, according to Reuters. The vessel was carrying 267 people, including 259 passengers and eight crew members, when it began taking on water shortly after departing Kyrenia for the Turkish port of Taşucu. 241 people were rescued, while survivors were seen clinging to the overturned hull as rescue teams reached the scene. The cause of the incident remains unknown.
The incident triggered a major search-and-rescue operation involving Turkish and Turkish Cypriot coast guard units, helicopters and naval assets. Reuters reported that the ferry eventually sank in approximately 514 metres of water, adding another challenge to efforts to locate those still missing. The vessel’s captain and crew were detained for questioning as authorities began investigating the circumstances surrounding the capsizing.
Beyond the immediate rescue operation, the accident has put passenger-vessel safety and maritime operations in the Eastern Mediterranean under renewed scrutiny. The ferry was operating on a regular route connecting Kyrenia with southern Türkiye, and the incident highlights how quickly a routine short-sea voyage can turn into a large-scale maritime emergency.
