An Amazon Air cargo aircraft crashed at Miami International Airport (MIA) on September 6 after overrunning the runway during landing, turning a routine cargo operation into a major aviation emergency. Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-33A operated by 21 Air, had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it ran beyond the end of Runway 30 and struck two vehicles. The crash killed five people on the ground and injured five others, including three critically. The two crew members aboard the aircraft survived.
The incident immediately affected airport operations. Flights were halted after the crash and later resumed, but on September 7, two of Miami International Airport’s four runways remained closed, creating continued operational constraints. MIA is a major U.S. air-cargo gateway, with the airport handling approximately 3.5 million metric tons of cargo over the previous year. Its cargo network includes major operators such as Amazon-related 21 Air, FedEx, UPS, DHL and other international all-cargo carriers. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the accident. Investigators recovered both the aircraft’s flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder and deployed a 32-person team to examine factors including aircraft performance, weather, air traffic control, airport infrastructure and operational procedures. The NTSB has not determined the cause of the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing. The incident highlights the importance of visibility across air-freight operations, particularly when cargo networks depend on major hubs where an unexpected airport disruption can quickly affect the wider supply chain.
