IKEA Supply is preparing to become the launch shipper for Kodiak AI’s driverless long-haul freight service in Texas later in 2026. Announced on September 29, the next phase of the partnership will introduce commercial freight transportation without a human in the truck’s cab. The planned service follows four years of autonomous trucking operations between the two companies, moving the partnership toward fully driverless highway deliveries.
Since beginning their collaboration, Kodiak AI has transported more than 1,300 IKEA loads and completed over 750,000 autonomous miles (1.2 million kilometers) with a safety observer aboard. According to Kodiak, these operations have taken place seven days a week, across different weather conditions, with a nearly perfect on-time delivery record. The companies now plan to remove the onboard safety observer for a 219-mile section of Interstate 45, primarily connecting Kodiak’s Houston-area and Dallas-area facilities. This driverless segment forms part of an established 292-mile freight route between IKEA’s distribution center in Baytown and its store in Frisco, Texas.
Before launching the service, Kodiak is completing the safety validation required for driverless highway operations. The company has also used its experience on the IKEA route to refine vehicle scheduling, warehouse arrival coordination, and predictive maintenance planning. The planned launch represents a new stage in a partnership built around real freight deliveries rather than isolated demonstrations. It also brings autonomous trucking closer to integration with established supply chain operations, where transportation planning, shipment visibility, and operational coordination remain essential.
