Furniture is next on the tariff list

President Trump announced a federal probe into furniture imports, with new tariffs set to arrive in the next 50 days. Rates aren’t yet defined, but the move follows recent levies on appliances made of steel and aluminum.
The U.S. imported nearly $28B in furniture last year from countries like Vietnam, China, Malaysia, and Canada. Analysts warn the policy could:
- Push costs onto wholesalers and retailers
- Add another headwind for container shipping volumes
- Raise prices on everyday household goods
Critics argue the “national security” case for foreign furniture production is thin. What’s certain: uncertainty in costs and supply chains just went up another notch.
