FMCSA Rolls Out Stricter ELD Approval Process

FMCSA Rolls Out Stricter ELD Approval Process

The FMCSA has revamped how Electronic Logging Devices get approved, aiming to block unreliable or fraudulent units from entering the market. New applications will now undergo tighter verification before being added to the official registry.

Key changes:

Mandatory verification of technical specs, contact info, and device images.

Stronger fraud-detection checks across active, revoked, and pending devices.

New status labels: Approved, Under Review, Info Requested, Denied, offering clearer visibility for fleets.

The updated system is designed to prevent tampered or non-compliant ELDs from slipping through, raising the bar for safety and Hours-of-Service compliance. Fleets should double-check that their current provider remains fully approved under the new rules.
